UN General-Secretary carry the Olympic 2012 torch during its journey through London Today it was his turn to carry. Ban Ki-moon had the flame in Westminster in the presence of IOC President Jacques Rogge, he carried it along Birdcage Walk from Storey’s Gate.The IOC and the UN have tie up for long-standing, strengthened their cooperation in 2009, when the UN decided to grant the IOC UN observer status.
The IOC and UN agencies working together on a range of programmes and projects just to contribute to the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through sport.
Previous year’s International Forum about Sport, Peace and Development, Ban Ki-moon said: “Sport has become a world language, a common denominator that breaks down all the walls, all the barriers. It is a worldwide industry whose practices can have a widespread impact. Most of all, it is a powerful tool for progress and development.”
UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Organising Committee (LOCOG) are Partners of IOC during the London 2012 Games. Their main motive is to collect sports wear from athletes and officials and distribute it to thousands of people in refugee camps worldwide. This is a tremendous morale-booster especially for young refugees, the gift of sportswear which famous athletes had in past . Local coordinators in the camps will also get the opportunity to organise sporting activities to fight against idleness and ease tensions.
